Deck Safety Tips

May is Deck Safety Month!

In honor of Deck Safety Month, we’ve compiled a list of safety tips as a reminder to examine your deck this season. Whether you’ve had your deck for years or you’re building a new one, these tips apply to you. Inspect your deck so that you can safely enjoy cozy evenings with your family and friends this summer!

1- Check Fasteners

  • If your deck boards are sagging or uneven, it might be time to check your fasteners. Look for any loose, rusted, or corroded fasteners. Be sure to tighten any loose fasteners or nails and consider replacing those that are rusted or corroded.

2- Check Stairs & Railings

  • If you have any railings or handrails, make sure to check that they are secure. Also, check that the risers and stringers are secure and undamaged.

3- Examine The Structure

  • Sound structure is especially important for deck safety. If the structure is visible, be sure to do a visual inspection and check for any sagging.

4- Secure Safety Gates

  • Make sure gates are securely fastened to your deck. Also, if needed, make sure that your gate locks are child proof.

Remember to have your deck inspected by a professional if you notice anything that concerns you. *This list is meant to act as a helpful reminder; however, using these tips to inspect your deck does not constitute a code compliant deck.
